PB: Meghan Ory
Canon Point: post-“In the Name of the Brother,” no intention of ever updating
Appearance: Caucasian; blue eyes; long, dark, wavy hair; about 5’7”; slender but very fit build. Three nights a month she looks like a GINORMOUS brown wolf; the first sign the change is coming, while she’s still human-shaped, is that her eyes go golden. Out of place from the rest of her clothing (standard early-21st-century American, no longer as practically-painted-on as she went for during the curse) is a gorgeous red brocade cloak that looks like it’d fit in well at a Renaissance fair.
History: Once upon a time, there was a girl who was raised by her grandmother. Tired of the restrictive life they led in fear of a local marauding wolf, she wanted nothing more than to see the rest of the kingdoms; she and her boyfriend were making plans to do just that.
And then, quite by accident, she ate him. Turned out her grandmother had neglected to mention a number of things, chief among them that Red was a third-generation werewolf and the cloak her grandmother always insisted she wear was enchanted to stop the transformation from happening. Eventually, she learned how to control the wolf (from her mother, who her grandmother had told her was dead), and decided the best approach to being a werewolf was embracing both the wolf and the human sides of herself, something neither of her forebears had tried.
And then her good friend Snow White’s stepmother cursed absolutely everyone, and she spent the next 28 years trapped in a small town in Maine, waitressing at her grandmother’s diner/B&B and having the same argument with said grandmother every night. Due to the nature of the curse, Ruby didn’t know how long it had been until it was broken. She just knew she was miserable. Once it broke, she re-learned her self-control and helped keep the town semi-functional.
At the point she gets swept away to the Warehouse, the curse is broken but no one can leave town; they’re not sure how to get everyone back to the Enchanted Forest; one of her best friends has just been mind-wiped again thanks to said friend’s boyfriend having a dick-measuring contest at the town line; and she’s rescued Dr. Frankenstein from his own manpain.
Personality: Ruby’s a friendly sort, and willing to talk to just about anyone – but if you’re threatening her or someone she considers part of her pack, you’d best watch out for her quick temper. After the Peter incident, she’s been very worried about hurting those close to her, even once she learned to control the wolf. (She has killed since then, but only in defense of herself or her people.) She sees no reason why she has to reject either the wolf or the human; they’re both part of her. Now that she remembers her self-control, she’s far less insecure than she was during the curse.
She has a strong streak of wanderlust that she’s never quite gotten to fulfill, except for so far as being on the run counts – even after the memory-loss curse over Storybrooke broke, she couldn’t leave town without losing her memories all over again. Now that the worst is over, she appreciates the chance to start over without all the baggage of her life in the Enchanted Forest.
During the curse she had a very strong flirtatious streak, of a sort the Enchanted Forest really had no context for. Now that it’s settled out she’s dialed that back quite a bit – less obvious makeup, clothes that don’t look like they’re painted on – as she regained her true self-confidence. This isn’t to say she won’t flirt with someone she finds attractive, but it’s no longer the strong priority it once was.
Special facts/special abilities about your character? Ruby’s a werewolf! She always has a very strong sense of smell and hearing, and supernaturally fast reflexes/enhanced strength (though she’s much stronger when she’s actually wolf-shaped). Three nights a month she actually turns into a wolf, unless she’s wearing her cloak or someone puts it on her (which then reverses the transformation). This is no longer a hazard to her friends, as she knows how to keep her head; she won’t attack anyone except in self-defense. Silver is just about the only thing that slows her down, though she hasn’t been in any hurry to see if she’s invulnerable to normal bullets. Her nose can be overwhelmed by strong scents, such as the contents of a flower shop.
Werewolf senses aside, she’s also an excellent tracker by footprints, and a dab hand with a bow and arrow. She knows a hell of a lot about woodland survival.
What is arriving with your character? Clothes (blouse, jeans, boots, 21st-century underwear/socks); her cloak; purse (with wallet, some money, random diner receipts, a few hygiene products, lipstick, mascara, cell phone); car/house keys
PART 3 - Writing Samples
1. First Person Writing Sample: Okay, right. Um. So I just got here, and this is crazy, and I promise I’m done quoting pop songs now.
First order of business, I don’t know if there are any other werewolves around here. Everyone else, don’t panic, I got out of the habit of attacking people ages ago. But if anyone else is one, and you don’t have a way of keeping your head while you’re wolfy, I can… well, at least try to explain how I do it. It might help. And if that doesn’t work, maybe we can at least keep each other company over full moons.
Second order of business, how the hell are we supposed to keep busy around here? This is worse than Maine.
2. Third Person Writing Sample: Sandbox thread!
3. First or Third person sample: Her room would have a photo of a wolf on the wall.
As Ruby flops on the bed, she starts feeling a little panicky – clearly there was some kind of magic or science in that purple crap, or she would have been freaking out a lot sooner. She can’t go home. Not that anyone knows how to get home home, but – Snow and Emma haven’t been back from the Enchanted Forest for very long, she wants to help get Belle’s memories back, Dr. Whale will probably need more than one night’s worth of sounding board, she’s not at all convinced that guy who crashed his car coming into town won’t mean them any trouble once he’s recovered, and… well, something smelled weird at the docks. Like, obviously Hook followed Emma and Snow back somehow, but Ruby’s not convinced he did that alone. And now she can’t help untangle that.
To try to take her mind off things, she starts going through more of the survival kit. There’s an ID – ‘Eliza Donnelly,’ really? She doesn’t even look Irish – and more information about 21st-century Earth than Regina ever saw fit to give anyone (probably including herself). The communicator thing she’ll worry about figuring out later.
It’s the map that really fills her with dismay. This place is even more isolated than Storybrooke, and she can’t get more than 15 miles away from it?
At least it looks like there’s somewhere she can run on the full moons. And frankly, the fact that Mr. Hologram said she doesn’t have to worry about passing on the curse anymore is a huge weight off her shoulders (presumably it’d still be an issue if she ever gets pregnant, but there’s a doctor on the contact list; she can always ask about that if it becomes a potential issue).
And yes, okay, these people don’t know who she is or have any reason to trust her yet. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t upset about being left out of all the really interesting stuff. There’s more to this business than Mr. Hologram said, and she wants to find out what. Maybe it’s the adventure she always wanted to have, but never really got to.
